Local Student Begins School Based Apprenticeship Following Industry Connection

A local connection has helped open the door to a promising career pathway for Woodcrest State College student Douglas, who has recently commenced a school based apprenticeship with The Drake Group.

Douglas first connected with The Drake Group through the Springfield Regional Jobs Committee while seeking work experience opportunities. Initially interested in becoming a heavy diesel mechanic, Douglas was introduced to the manufacturing and engineering environment at Drake, where apprenticeship opportunities were focused on boilermaking.

At the time, Douglas admitted he was not entirely sure what a boilermaker did. However, after completing work experience with the team, he quickly developed an interest in the trade and the workplace environment.

The Drake Group recognised Douglas’ enthusiasm and potential throughout the placement and were keen to continue supporting his development by offering him a school based apprenticeship while he completes his formal education.

It was also fantastic to recently catch up with Douglas and Shanee Cave from The Drake Group at the Woodcrest State College Careers Event, where Douglas had come full circle and was proudly promoting career opportunities in boilermaking to other students. Seeing a young person share their own apprenticeship journey and encourage others to consider industry pathways was a powerful reminder of the impact local connections and opportunities can create.

The Springfield Regional Jobs Committee said the outcome highlights the importance of strong local partnerships between schools, employers and community organisations.

“Part of our role is listening to industry, understanding workforce needs and helping connect young people with meaningful opportunities that can lead to long term careers,” the Committee said.

“Sometimes students are not aware of the wide range of career pathways available to them until they have the chance to experience an industry firsthand. Seeing a young person begin their career journey through an apprenticeship is always incredibly rewarding.”

The Committee also acknowledged The Drake Group for their willingness to invest in local young people and provide practical pathways into industry.
