Investing in the Workforce Behind Queensland’s Construction Pipeline

The Springfield Regional Jobs Committee recently attended the launch of Construction Skills Queensland’s 2026 to 27 Training Plan, which includes a record $83.5 million investment in training and skills across Queensland’s construction industry.

The plan includes initiatives aimed at supporting apprentices, increasing the participation of women in construction and making training more accessible for people already working within the industry.

The launch also brought together industry, employers, training, education and workforce partners to discuss the workforce challenges and opportunities facing Queensland’s construction sector.

Of particular interest to the SRJC was the industry panel discussion and the insights shared by employers about what they are experiencing on the ground.

With Queensland facing a significant pipeline of housing, infrastructure and major projects, meeting future demand is not simply a question of how much can be built. It also requires a workforce with the skills and capacity to deliver it.

That means attracting more people into construction, creating clear pathways for apprentices and new entrants, developing the skills of the existing workforce and, importantly, retaining people within the industry.

These challenges are particularly relevant for the Springfield region, which sits alongside significant construction, infrastructure and industry growth.

Ensuring local people can see and access the employment and training pathways created by this growth is an important part of the SRJC’s work. Equally important is continuing to listen to employers about the skills they need and strengthening the connections between industry, education and training so those needs can be addressed.

Investment in projects needs to be matched by investment in people.

The SRJC welcomes the continued investment in Queensland’s construction workforce and looks forward to seeing how the 2026 to 27 Training Plan translates into opportunities for employers, existing workers and the next generation entering the industry.
